A Year of Truth Contest

Enter New Westminster’s Year of Truth contest throughout the months of June and July 2023.

To enter the contest, provide a brief description of what you have learned about the Indigenous experience. There is no limit to the number of times you can enter.

Submission examples:

“I learned that rubber was invented by Native Americans before Columbus took it back to Europe.”

“I learned that there are seven First Nations who have identified the land of New Westminster as part of their traditional territories.”

“I learned that the Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led movement to engage all men and boys in ending violence against women and children.”

“I learned that the last Indian Residential School in Canada didn’t close until 1996.”

At the end of the month, we will draw for a variety of prizes, including:

  • KGift cards from local Indigenous businesses
  • KA soup and bannock lunch with the City’s Elder in Residence, Indigenous Relations Advisor, and Mayor
  • KThe chance to see your name and entry displayed on banners throughout the city

As a city and community, we need to understand the mistakes of our past in order to make meaningful reconciliation. We need to learn about all that was stolen and all that was lost so that we can continue to live, work, and play on the lands and waters now known as New Westminster.
